http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/President_of_the_United_States
According to wikipedia, the role of the president to preside over congress and to act as an aid in foreign affairs.  He is also the Leader and head role in the country.  The president has the power to veto bills put forth by congress, and he also has the power to regulate the economy with oversight from congress.

This article talks about the "seven roles" of the president.  These include, Chief of State, Chief Executive, Chief Diplomat, Commander-in-Chief, Chief Legislature, Chief of Party, Chief Guardian of the Economy..  The president has the power to do all of these things, but if he doesn't do them, the country will go down the drain.

This article talks about how the president is a party leader.  This means that he gets members of his own political party elected to congress.  I feel this isn't always good, because of all the underhanded stuff that goes on during elections.

This last article just outlines the roles of the president in about the same manner as the articles above.  It says he is the commander in chief and is the head figure of this country.
